Negative scanner

This guide will be based on using the following Camera equipment:

  • Canon EOS 40D (but any Canon APS-C sensor size camera will work)
  • Tokina 90mm f/2.8 macro

Inspiration

Equipment

  • 55-77mm step up ring Jiakgong (ordered)
  • 55mm pol filter (we only need the ring) Jiakgong (ordered)
  • 75mm PVC drainpibe
  • Dias film holder (getting a bunch from my dad)

What to do

  1. remove filter from filter ring
  2. calculate/measure length of PVC pibe to give a full 35mm film view (it's better to crop in software that to loose image)
  3. cut PVC pipe to length
  4. mount PVC pibe to the step up ring on the 77mm side
  5. mount dias film holder to opposite end of PVC pibe
  6. mount the pol filter ring between the lens and “scan unit”

At this point we are ready to go and just need some proper light and a few solutions may work:

  • LCD screen (laptop, tv or whatever)
  • soft box

Measurements

35mm film strip at 15,20 and 25cm

15cm

20cm

25cm

I'd say around 18cm tube will do the trick - the pol filter ring and step up ring will also add a little distance…
